"Today honour your Self" - A Course in Miracles.

A lot of people hear or read those words and tend to think that they're some sort of wishy washy mumbo jumbo.  The truth is that in the whole personal development sector, the relationships industry, counselling and therapy, there is a lot of wishy washy mumbo jumbo, particularly from a lot of people who want to be seen as "gurus" and "experts".  The problem is because a lot of these so-called "experts" are so caught up in the need to be seen as a master and become a celebrity that they think they need to complicate a simple truth in order to make it confusing and, in the process, water down any relevant impact a message may actually have.

"Today honour your Self" was taken from the book A Course in Miracles and to me the truth, and the instruction is quite simple.  The question then becomes, what do I do to honour my Self today?  The answer is I haven't decided yet, but it may be something along the lines of trying to learn something new, meditating (I've already worked out so that counts if I can't come up with anything else), taking some quiet time and enjoying a piece of chocolate, or some fruit or a salad, having a bath or whatever it is that I decide to do.

But if you notice, everything I've listed above has one thing in common.  Every single action is about one thing and one thing only.  Me

Some people may read this and think, "Typical man.  How selfish."  And you know what?  It's okay to think that because on one level you're completely correct.  I am being selfish if I'm going to take the time for myself to enjoy any of those activities.  But on another level it's the most selfless thing I can do because by honouring myself, give myself time to regroup and destress or improve my knowledge or my calm, what I'm actually doing is giving the people I care about the best "me" I can.

I'm giving them a "me" that is more patient, caring, calm and loving.  And the thing is that a lot of these things only take a few minutes here or there throughout the day so it's not like I'm unavailable the whole time.

So, you see, there's nothing wishy washy, or bad about honouring yourself.  In fact, it really is a necessity if you love the people around you.
